He's as close to Superman as the sport of distance running is likely to see. Nothing can stop him. Through no fault of his own, he missed a connecting flight from Ethiopia to Great Britain and arrived in Edinburgh, the site of the World Cross Country Championships, later than he would have liked. And a bout of digestive distress kept him up for much of one night. Then, after he finally got to the starting line, his shoe was clipped from behind in the third kilometer of the 12K race and eventually he had to stop and put it securely back on, losing a likely 15 seconds in the process. So what happened after that? He won his sixth World Cross Country long course title, breaking a tie with two other five-time titlists, Paul Tergat and John Ngugi. "This is a very high honor in my life," observed Bekele. Could a challenger of the future have emerged? The runnerup to Bekele, Leonard Patrick Komon of Kenya, is only 20. Zersenay Tadese, the 2007 champion, placed third. And despite all the fears about what post-election violence in Kenya would do to their team's preparations, the Kenyan men won the team title over Ethiopia quite handily.
